Wijgmaal Railway Station: a 19th-century station becomes a circular icon

Wijgmaal Railway Station : a 19th-century station becomes a circular icon

Joost Declercq

The former railway station of Wijgmaal is given a second life, entirely built around circularity. The bricks from the collapsed façade are reused in the new concrete structure, while the greenhouse on the roof consists of reclaimed glass and the façade of reused timber. As a result, we are writing a new chapter for the building, with respect for its past and an eye on the future.

Sufficiency puts users, daylight and natural ventilation at the centre to optimise energy use, CO₂ and dynamic comfort in healthcare buildings.
Combinations of window size, glazing and solar shading determine energy use and comfort in patient rooms and thus act as a lever for more sustainable healthcare buildings.
The Archipelago office in Leuven shows how mass, glazing, solar shading and natural ventilation make buildings more resilient to future heatwaves.
